Abstract
Historical land use information is essential for environmental management and risk assessment, yet it is often fragmented and difficult to access. We present a spatially integrated historical land‑use and contamination dataset for London, Ontario, Canada, developed by combining contemporary GIS layers with diverse archival and documentary sources. Site locations were initially defined using a municipal parks polygon dataset to prioritize publicly accessible green spaces. Each site was examined through an iterative process using digital media, municipal and conservation authority reports, historical newspapers, library archives, fire insurance plans, historical aerial photographs, topographic maps, and engineering and monitoring documents. Analog materials were digitized and georeferenced, and multiple sources were used to cross‑validate. We built a standardized attribute table documenting past land use, industry type, operational dates, known or suspected contaminants, source citations, and risk‑based recommendations. The resulting polygon and point layers provide an extensible geodatabase that supports decision-making in risk management.

Description of the data and file structure
In this dataset, we compile land history information from a variety of sources, including digital media, engineering manuscripts, historical maps, fire insurance plans, aerial imagery, and newspapers, to piece together supplementary records and produce a spatial dataset characterizing past land use, along with known and potential soil and water contamination in urban green spaces in London, Ontario, Canada.
Files and variables
File: Metadata.xlsx
Description: This file contains two Excel sheets associated with the spatial layers contained in SoilTestPoints.zip and LondonOnLandUseHistory.zip. Each sheet lists the column names in each attribute table, along with a description of what each column contains.
Variables
- Column: Field names as they appear in the attribute tables of datasets accessed through the file geodatabase
- Truncated Column: Corresponding field names in the downloadable shapefiles (SoilTestPoints.zip and LondonOnLandUseHistory.zip), which are truncated because of shapefile field name length constraints
- Description: a description of the field
File: ZoteroBibliography.html
Description: This file contains the full reference list for the in text citations included in the LondonOnLandUseHistory.zip polygon layer's attribute table.
File: SoilTestPoints.zip
Description: This zipped set of files (.cpg, .dbf, .prj, .sbn, .sbx, .shp, .shx) contains a point geometry layer of soil tests perfomed and their results. Spatial reference is EPSG 4269, projected into NAD 1983 UTM Zone 17N.
File: LondonOnLandUseHistory.zip
Description: This zipped set of files (.cpg, .dbf, .prj, .sbn, .sbx, .shp, .shx) contains a polygon geometry layer of urban green space locations that were investigated for past land use history. Spatial reference is EPSG 4269, projected into NAD 1983 UTM Zone 17N.
File: LondonOnLandUseHistoryData.gdb.zip
Description: The zipped file contains a single ArcGIS File Geodatabase. This geodatabase contains the layers from SoilTestPoints.zip and LondonOnLandUseHistory.zip as feature classes with associated symbology. When unzipped, one will see how there are multiple files, this is normal as they are system files that work together when a layer is opened from the geodatabase. The layers in the geodatabase cannot be accessed outside of geospatial software, as this is how the system files are called. Spatial reference is EPSG 4269, projected into NAD 1983 UTM Zone 17N.
Code/software
It is recommended to use this data in a spatial software program, such as ArcGIS Pro or QGIS, to view the dataset's attribute table and spatial geometry most effectively.
Changes after Jun 17, 2026: The metadata file has been updated to include the field names as they appear in the downloaded shapefiles, in addition to the original file geodatabase field names. This change addresses field name truncation that occurs when exporting/downloading shapefiles and improves consistency between the data files and metadata. A spelling error in the metadata field name "BiologicalContamiantion" has also been corrected to "BiologicalContamination."
