Abstract
Animals may interact incidentally, by sharing space, or intentionally, by seeking out interactions. Understanding which elements of social interactions can be explained by spatial behavior and which cannot may uncover drivers of individual fitness and population functioning. In an avian scavenger, we tested how space use covaried with social position while flying, feeding, and roosting. We also identified the deviation of observed social centrality from chance and examined how this non-incidental social centrality covaried with space use. In flight, space use was positively associated only with observed social centrality, suggesting that interactions while flying emerge primarily from co-movement. In contrast, space use covaried with non-incidental social centrality while roosting, suggesting a stronger importance of social preferences when interacting at roost sites. Our work demonstrates that the role of animal movements in shaping social interactions differs across social situations. Such an understanding of the spatial-social interface is essential for predicting population responses to environmental changes and conserving threatened species.

Description of the data and file structure
Notes on the dataset
This submission includes data files associated with the manuscript "Relationship between spatial and social phenotypes in an avian scavenger (JAE-2025-00389.R2).
To protect this sensitive species, which is locally endangered and under active management by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, all GPS locations in the raw data have been shifted in the X and Y directions by a randomly selected number of kilometers. The shifted coordinates are provided here, along with shapefiles for the masking region and roost polygons that have been shifted by the same amount to preserve the reproducibility of the analysis.
Access to the original GPS coordinates may be granted upon reasonable request to the authors, pending approval by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.
This dataset includes the following "raw" files:
inpa_shifted (shifted raw GPS coordinates and associated information for vultures tagged by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority)
ornitela_shifted (shifted raw GPS coordinates and associated information for vultures tagged by the Tel Aviv University research team, in association with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority)
CutOffRegion_shifted (shifted polygon used as a mask to remove individuals that spent most of their time outside the main study area)
roosts50_kde95_shifted (shifted polygons representing known vulture roost locations, used as a mask during the computation of social interactions)
whoswho_vultures_20230920_reduced (information about each vulture included in the dataset, including names and tag numbers)
For convenience, the dataset also includes the following derived file, which can be used to run the modeling code.
Linked (data file containing combined space use information and social network measures for each individual included in the analysis. This dataset is also produced by the targets pipeline included in the code in the Github repository, i.e. it is derived from the raw datasets listed above.)
GPS data is collected as described in the manuscript and is associated with an ongoing study of Eurasian Griffon Vultures (Gyps fulvus). The data provided cover a three-year span out of an ongoing long-term study.
Files and variables
File: roosts50_kde95_shifted.kml
Description: A shapefile containing polygon representations of known vulture roost sites, used as a mask when computing social interactions. The polygons were defined using a DBSCAN clustering procedure on roost locations from many years, as described in Acácio, M., K. Gahm, N. Anglister, G. Vaadia, O. Hatzofe, R. Harel, R. Efrat, et al. 2024. Behavioral plasticity shapes population aging patterns in a long-lived avian scavenger. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 121:e2407298121. All polygons have been shifted in the X and Y directions by a randomly selected number of kilometers to protect the roosting locations of this sensitive species.
File: CutOffRegion_shifted.kml
Description: A shapefile whose boundaries defined the approximate region around Israel. This polygon was used as a mask to exclude individual vultures from the analysis if they spent most of their time outside the main study region. This polygon has been shifted in the X and Y directions by the same randomly selected number of kilometers as described above to maintain reproducibility of the analysis code.

Description: Reference file containing information about the vultures involved in the study, as well as periods of time during which recorded data should be excluded (such as hospitalizations). Contains two sheets: "all gps tags" and "periods_to_remove".
Variables (Sheet: "all gps tags")
- Nili_id: Name of the individual vulture as assigned by the research team
- trnsmt_id: ID of the GPS transmitter the vulture is carrying
- last_wing_tag: Most recent wing tag ID number/letter combination
- wing_tag_color: Most recent wing tag color
- Movebank_study: Which movebank study (i.e. INPA vs. ornitela) the vulture is associated with
- Movebank_id: ID number to be matched to how it is stored in Movebank
- birth_year: Year that the vulture was born, if known
- age_group: Age category of the vulture at the time of tag deployment (adult, juvenile, or subadult), if known.
- sex: Sex of the vulture, if known
Variables (Sheet: "periods_to_remove")
- Nili_id: Name of the individual vulture for which data should be removed, as assigned by the research team
- Movebank_study: Which Movebank study (i.e. INPA vs. ornitela) this vulture is associated with
- Movebank_id: ID number of the vulture for which data should be removed, to be matched to how it is stored in Movebank
- n_removal: Index of the removal period for this individual
- remove_start: Start date of the period to be removed (DD-Month-YY)
- remove_end: End date of the period to be removed (DD-Month-YY)
- reason: Reason for removal of the period (e.g. tag has fallen off; vulture is in the hospital; vulture has died, etc.)
