Abstract
Renewable energy sources are expanding but may negatively affect wildlife in complex ways. Raptors are susceptible to wind turbines; collisions with turbines are well-studied, but the potential for spatial displacement has received less attention. We studied the effects of wind turbines on the distribution and abundance of raptors at a renowned wintering and migration stopover site on Amherst Island, Ontario, Canada. We used standardized surveys involving 3,278 observations of raptors to record their presence and precise locations during winter and spring migration for three years before and three years after the windfarm was built, incorporating both spatial and temporal controls. We found no evidence that wind turbines impacted how Northern Harrier (Circus hudsonicus), Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus), Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus), or American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) use Amherst Island during winter and spring migration. Similarly, we found no evidence for declines in abundance of these species, or of Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) and Northern Shrike (Lanius borealis), following turbine construction. Our results illustrate how spatial controls, in the absence of temporal controls, can lead to inaccurate assessments of turbine impacts for species that use habitats differentially.

Obs = Observation number. Each raptor observation has its own unique observation number.
Species = indicates the species of an observed raptor ("AMKE" = American Kestrel, "BAEA" = Bald Eagle, "NOHA" = Northern Harrier, "RLHA" = Rough-legged Hawk, "RTHA" = Red-tailed Hawk, "SNOW" = Snowy Owl, "TUVU" = Turkey Vulture, "OSPR" = Osprey, "MERL" = Merlin, "GHOW" = Great Horned Owl, "NOSH" = Northern Shrike, "SEOW" = Short-eared Owl, "PEFA" = Peregrine Falcon, "COHA" = Cooper's Hawk, "RSHA" = Red-shouldered Hawk, "GOEA" = Golden Eagle)
Morph = indicates the morph, when possible (i.e. dark vs light morphs of Rough-legged Hawks) of an observed raptor
Turbines = indicates whether the raptor observation was made before or after turbines had been built on Amherst Island (pre = 2015, 2016, 2017, post = 2019, 2022, 2023)
Route = indicates whether we started on the east or west side of the island on the field day a raptor observation took place
Year = the year a raptor observation took place
Month = the month (January, February, March, or April) a raptor observation took place
Day = the day a raptor observation took place
Time = the time (hh:mm) using the 24-hour clock of when a raptor observation took place
Hour = the hour when a raptor observation took place
Minute = the minute when a raptor observation took place
Age = denotes age of the observed raptor
Sex = denotes sex (male or female) of the observed raptor
latitude = latitude point of a raptor observation on or near Amherst Island
longitude = longitude point of a raptor observation on or near Amherst Island
Height.m = indicates estimation of how high raptor was at the time of observation in meters, on the ground/ice = 0m.
Substrate/Activity = denotes what substrate a raptor was observed on
Ice = denotes whether a raptor was observed on the island or on the ice

Count.yr = indicates the year the Christmas Bird Count observations took place

ave.number = average abundance
ave.num/hour = average abundance per survey hour (i.e. (mean(number of raptors observed/number of survey hours))
Count.N = number of raptor observations
