Abstract
This dataset supports the study on calling behaviors of four anuran species (Microhyla fissipes, Leptobrachium hainanensis, Hylarana guentheri, Amolops torrentis) in relation to habitat temperature in the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, China. The data were collected via a combination of human-based field surveys and passive acoustic monitoring (PAM). The file 1 (1_data.csv) contains habitat temperature (°C) recorded at two temporal contexts (Group 1: daily periods; Group 2: actively calling periods) for each species. The file 2 (2_data.csv) and file 3 (3_data.csv) contain data during calling periods (any period when calling occurred, including within daily cycles) and data during actively calling periods (subsets when animals were confirmed to be actively vocalizing), respectively. These data can be reused to model thermal niches and calling thresholds of tropical anurans or compare calling behavior between terrestrial and aquatic frog species under temperature fluctuations. All data were collected under permits issued by the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park administration. No endangered or protected species were handled or harmed.

This dataset contains habitat temperature measurements and calling behavior metrics (call count and call duration) for four anuran species: Microhyla fissipes (MF), Leptobrachium hainanensis (LH), Hylarana guentheri (HG), and Amolops torrentis (AT). Data were collected in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, China, using a combination of field surveys and passive acoustic monitoring (PAM). The dataset supports analyses of how calling behavior relates to daily temperature fluctuations. Three CSV files are provided, separating daily temperature recordings from calling periods and actively calling periods.
Description of the data and file structure
Temporal contexts defined in the files:
- Daily periods (Group 1): 24-hour cycles, recorded at 1-hour intervals (hour 0 to 23).
- Calling periods (Group 2): Time stamps when any calling activity was detected across the entire recording period.
- Actively calling periods (Group 3): Subset of calling periods when animals were confirmed to be actively vocalizing (higher intensity or consistent calling).

File 1_data.csv – Temperature data comparing across four species in daily periods and actively calling periods.
Column structure (repeated in pairs: Species1 data, then Species2 data):
- Species1, Species2: Species code (MF, LH, HG, AT)
- Tim1(h), Tim2(h): Time of measurement (hour of day, 0–23)
- Tem1(℃), Tem2(℃): Habitat temperature (degrees Celsius, one decimal)
File 2_data.csv – Calling period data (any detected calling).
Column groups for each species (MF, LH, HG, AT):
- [Species]_tim1(h): Time of measurement (calling period)
- [Species]_tem1(℃): Habitat temperature (calling period)
- [Species]_cou: Call count (calls per hour, integer)

File 3_data.csv – Actively calling period data.
Same column structure as File 2_data.csv, but data restricted to actively calling periods (confirmed intensive vocalization).

- Tim(h): Hour of day (0–23, integer)
