Abstract
This dataset compiles a structured coding of 46 empirical studies included in a systematic scoping review on social norms and rule compliance in natural resource co-management. The dataset is organized at the study level and includes variables capturing: (i) bibliographic information; (ii) study context (geographic region, resource system, governance arrangement); (iii) conceptualization of social norms (explicit definitions, theoretical framing); (iv) operationalization of norms (types of indicators used, including descriptive norms, injunctive norms, personal norms, sanctions, legitimacy, and related constructs); and (v) reported links between normative mechanisms and compliance outcomes. Data values consist of categorical codes, binary indicators (presence/absence), short textual excerpts, and analytical notes documenting how each study defined and measured social norms and related behavioral mechanisms. The dataset enables comparative analysis of conceptual clarity, measurement practices, and theoretical alignment across disciplines and empirical contexts. The dataset can be reused for meta-analyses, theory-building on social norms and compliance, methodological reviews of norm operationalization, and the development of standardized coding frameworks for social-ecological research.

1. Dataset Overview
This dataset documents the coding and synthesis of 46 empirical and theoretical studies included in the systematic scoping review: How social norms are integrated in natural resource co-management.
The dataset captures how social norms are defined, framed, measured, and linked to compliance and cooperation across diverse natural resource systems (fisheries, forests, wildlife, water) and governance arrangements. It enables transparency, replication, and reuse of the review’s analytical framework.
2. Files Included
Dataset.xlsm
Main dataset file containing the full coding of the 46 reviewed studies. Each row corresponds to one study (ID 1–46), and each column corresponds to a coded attribute related to bibliographic information, study design, resource system, conceptual framing of social norms, and operational indicators.
The file can be opened using:
· Microsoft Excel
· LibreOffice
· Google Sheets
No macros are required to use the file.
