Abstract
Nesting-assistance’: a new hypothesis for the evolution of polyandry and a test in an African foam nesting treefrog
Data analysed for the paper.
Description: Data was collected from a population of African foam nesting treefrogs (Chiromantis xerampelina) located in Hans Merensky Nature Reserve (24e25380S, 31e22400E, 462 m a.s.l.) in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Data was collected on 99 consecutive breeding nights between November 19, 2006 and March 3, 2007.
We collected data on:
1. The leg churning behaviour of frogs involved in making 65 nests to assess; i) the degree of synchrony in leg churning behaviour and ii) the proportion of time of female leg churning that also involved male leg churning.
2. Ellipsoid nest volume (ml) and the body size (snout-vent length, SVL) of females that made the nests for 134 matings.
3. Nest success for 134 nests, including data on the cause of nest failure (either nests desiccating or being blown down from trees).

Tab 1: Synchrony data. This tab contains data used to calculate the degree of behavioural synchrony in leg churning behaviour, and the percentage of time of a female-leg churning bout that male-leg churning was also observed. Column A shows the nest number (nest 1-65). Column B shows the number of males involved in nest construction. Column C shows the time interval (recorded in seconds) ‘before’ a female started leg churning, and then again ‘after’ the same female started leg churning, noting that the ‘before’ time matches the duration of the ‘after’ time. The ‘after time’ reflects the actual duration of leg churning. Columns D to J show whether each female and male involved in the nest construction was or wasn’t churning their hind legs during each second of the observation period. Values of ‘0’ indicate no leg churning, while values of ‘1’ indicate active leg churning. Blank cells indicate that there was no frog present in that column. For example, ‘Nest 1’ only involved a female and a male, so cells are left blank for males 2-6 (columns F-J).
Tab 2. Data for Gen. Reg. for Kappa. This tab contains data used to run a Generalised regression analysis with logit function and beta distribution to assess the relationship between the number of males involved in a nest and the degree of synchrony for i) the entire group of nesting frogs, as well as ii) the amplectant pair alone. Column A shows the nest number (1-65), column B shows the number of males involved in a nest construction (1-6), column C shows the mating type (monandrous/polyandrous), column D shows the duration of a female- leg churning bout (sec), column E shows the Cohens Kappa value calculated for pairs of frogs, column F shows the Kappa value calculated for all frogs involved in nest construction, column G shows the transformed Cohens Kappa value calculated for pairs of frogs, column H shows the transformed Kappa value calculated for all frogs involved in nest construction. For columns G and H the transformation was made using the equation , where y was the proportion data, and n was the sample size.
Tab 3: Data for nest size analysis. This tab contains data on nest number for 134 nests (column A), the number of males involved in a nest construction (column B), female Snout-vent length (column C), nest height, width and nest depth (columns D-F), nest semi-axis height, width and depth (columns G-I), Ellipsoid nest volume (column J), nest desiccation status (column K), and nest success outcome (column L).
Tab 4: Data on Gen. Reg. for churn time. This tab contains data used to run the Generalised Regression testing for a relationship between the number of males involved in nest construction and the % of female leg churn time involving male leg churning. Column A shows the nest number (1-65), column B shows the number of males involved in nest construction, column C shows the duration (seconds) of a female leg churning bout, column D shows the duration (seconds) that all nesting males leg churned, column E shows the percentage (%) of time of a female leg churning bout that all nesting males leg churned, column F shows the proportion of time of a female leg churning bout that all nesting males leg churned, column G shows the transformed proportion of female bout that males leg churned, noting that data was transformed (compressed) using the equation , where y was the proportion data, and n was the sample size.
Tab 5: Data for GLMM. This tab contains data used to run the Generalised Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) (with logit function and beta distribution) to assess whether there was a difference between monandrous and polyandrous nests in the proportion of time of a female churning leg churning bout that individual males leg churned. Column A shows the nest number (1-65), column B shows the mating type (mondandrous/polyandrous), column C shows the number of males involved in nest construction, column D shows the ID number (1-6) for individual nesting males, column E shows the duration (seconds) of a female leg churning bout, column F shows the duration (seconds) that individual nesting males leg churned, column G shows the proportion of time of a female leg churning bout that individual nesting males leg churned, column H shows the transformed proportion of female bout that males leg churned, noting that data was transformed (compressed) using the equation , where y was the proportion data, and n was the sample size.
