Abstract
Nearly all the blood supplying the cortex exits via the bridging veins (BVs) that drain into the superior sagittal sinus (SSS), making these vessels key chokepoints for cerebral blood flow. Using optical imaging in head-fixed mice, we found that the SSS and BVs exhibit ultrafast contractions (<0.1 s) at the onset of locomotion, following whisker stimulation, and upon awakening from sleep. Contractions of the BV and SSS were strongly correlated with abdominal muscle EMG activity and were tightly correlated with respiration at rest. The rapid decrease in blood volume caused by venous constrictions resulted in spurious increases in fluorescence in mice expressing fluorescent reporter proteins, creating artifacts that mimic functional signals. Venous contractions with the same amplitude and dynamics could be generated in anesthetized mice by abdominal pressure application, showing that these contractions were generated by mechanical coupling with the abdomen. Externally imposed abdominal pressures also drove a rapid but transient increase in blood flow. Unlike the pial and parenchymal microvasculature, whose diameters are controlled by local signals, the diameters of SSS/BV are dynamically controlled during behavior by abdominal muscle regulation of intracranial pressure, establishing a pathway for regulation of cerebral hemodynamics via mechanical coupling between the central nervous system and the viscera.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DATA AND FILE STRUCTURE
This dataset contains the data and analysis code used to generate figures for the manuscript "Ultrafast venous and sagittal sinus constrictions in the brain driven by abdominal pressure". All the data used to generate the figures are in the subfolder "Data" and are stored in MATLAB (*.mat) format.
The dataset is named to link with the figure (and its subplots). For example: "fig_1_c.mat" means the dataset contains data used for generating the plot for Figure 1, subplot C. However, there are some exceptions, listed below:
- CBF_all.mat: measurements of cerebral blood flow using Laser Doppler Flowmetry
- EMG.mat: measurements of abdominal muscle electromyography
- GFP_results.mat & GFP_results_parenchyma.mat: measurements of fluorescence signals related to Figure 3 and Supplementary Figure 5
- MS03.mat: measurements of brain hemodynamics using a miniscope in one freely behaving mouse
Each file contains raw data for example figures and trial-averaged data for each signal type. There are four major experiments. The conditions are locomotion, whisker stimulation, sleep, and abdominal compression. Unless noticed otherwise, each variable is organized in the following structure: individual events/animals X time.

MATLAB CODE
All MATLAB code is under the subfolder "Code". There are three types of code:
- generate_figure_main.m: main file for generating figure
- plot_fig_x_x.m: these files are used for generating each subplot. For example: plot_fig_1_c.m will generate figure 1, subplot c
- Other support files: these files (including the ones in the subfolder "cbrewer") are support files for generating figures
This code has been tested on Windows 11 operating systems and Mac Sequoia using MATLAB version 2023b. Compatibility with other operating systems or future MATLAB versions has not been verified. No other non-standard hardware is required.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR GENERATING FIGURES
Download data, extract"Venous_Collapse_ms.zip". Find the MATLAB script titled "generate_figure_main.m" following the path: Venous_Collapse_ms->Code->generate_figure_main.m
Run this script, and all the figures (including main figures and supplementary figures) will be saved as *.fig files in the folder named "Figure" under the main folder "Venous_Collapse_ms". No user input is required.
An important note: Subplots of some figures are populated during analysis. Clicking on figure windows while the figures are generating may scramble the contents of the figures and give unexpected results. Therefore, it is recommended that you wait until the code finishes running before interacting with the figures.
EXPECTED RUN TIME
Generate figure code: this code takes about 5 minutes to finish.
