Abstract
This dataset is part of a taxonomic treatment of the Petiolovariabilis clade of the genus Mimosa that includes a taxonomic revision of M. sect. Batocaulon ser. Filipedes and Paucifoliatae. The Petiolovariabilis clade comprises 30 species, including typical varieties of species subdivided at the variety rank, together with six additional non-typical varieties, totaling 36 lowest taxonomic units, mainly found in Brazil. These species are mostly herbs, subshrubs or shrubs found in seasonally dry forests and savannas. Supplemental Data I is a database of 3,664 examined specimens, including their source herbarium and fully revised coordinates. Supplemental Data II is a character matrix comprising all examined and informative traits. The final column contains a concatenated character string that generates a complete taxonomic description in text format. Supplemental Data III is a list of petiole vouchers used in the figures of this study. These datasets support the taxonomic treatment of the Petiolovariabilis clade of Mimosa presented in the associated manuscript.

Description of the data and file structure
The data were collected as part of a comprehensive taxonomic revision of Mimosa clade Petiolovariabilis. The dataset includes specimen-level occurrence records, a morphological character matrix used for species delimitation, and voucher references supporting illustrated diagnostic structures.
Supplemental_data-I.ods compiles 3,664 herbarium specimens with geographic coordinates and collection metadata forming the basis for distributional analyses.
Supplemental_data-II.ods provides a morphological character matrix including all examined and informative traits used for species delimitation and comparative analyses. The final column (Description) contains concatenated standardized morphological descriptions derived from matrix states and used to support the formal taxonomic treatment.
Supplemental_data-III.csv documents voucher specimens used for petiole illustrations presented in the manuscript figures.
Together, these datasets support species delimitation, morphological comparison, standardized species descriptions, and reproducibility of illustrated diagnostic characters.
Missing data codes
Missing values follow these conventions:
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| N/A | character not applicable |
| null | reserved for structurally expected but unavailable values (if present) |
| empty | Empty cells indicate that the corresponding information was either not observed during specimen examination or that the structure is absent in the corresponding taxon |
When necessary, geographic coordinates were revised during georeferencing validation; original coordinates are preserved in the latitude and longitude fields.

Description
Morphological character matrix including all examined and informative characters used for species delimitation and comparative analyses within Mimosa clade Petiolovariabilis.
Characters were scored from herbarium specimens examined during the taxonomic revision. Empty cells indicate that the corresponding information was either not observed during specimen examination or that the structure is absent in the taxon.
The final column (Description) corresponds to concatenated standardized descriptive statements derived automatically from matrix character states and used to support formal species descriptions.
Continuous measurements are expressed in millimeters (mm) when applicable.
Variables
The matrix includes vegetative, leaf architectural, indumentum, floral, fruit, and seed characters.
Examples include:
Clade
Taxonomic clade assignment within Mimosa.
Species
Species name.
