Abstract
Climate changes are predicted to strongly affect aquatic communities, and the consequences in coastal lagoons might be worsened by the tendency of salinization due to sea-level rise. This dataset provides the fish occurrence records, species abundance data, and climate projections used to evaluate potential changes in fish communities under scenarios of increased salinity associated with sea-level rise in a system of 38 interconnected coastal lagoons.

Description of the data and file structure
This dataset was used in the preparation of the manuscript Potential impacts of sea-level rise on fish communities in coastal lagoons of the Tramandaí River Hydrographic System, southern Brazil. It includes: (i) the abundance matrix of species sampled in each lagoon; and (ii) the presence matrix of endemic species under distinct salinity-change scenarios.
Files and variables
File: Table_SM_1.xlsx
Description: Total number of individuals per species captured in each lagoon of the Tramandaí River Hydrographic System (RS, Brazil). The worksheet “Species lakes” contains the abundance (number of individuals) of each species recorded in each lagoon. The worksheet “Identification of sampled lakes” provides the identification and corresponding codes of the sampled lagoons. Fish were sampled in shallow littoral zones using a seine net. Each lagoon was sampled twice in 2012: once during the warm season (October–April) and once during the cold season (May–September).
File: Table_SM_2.xlsx
Description: Occurrence records of Gymnogeophagus lacustris (GYL), Odontesthes bicudo (ODB), O. ledae (ODL), and O. piquava (ODP) in lagoons of the Tramandaí River Hydrographic System (RS, Brazil). Suffixes –1 and –2 represent projected occurrences under scenarios 1 (EC1) and 2 (EC2) of increased estuarine connectivity (EC). Estuarine connectivity (EC) is a simple metric of functional connectivity in which the estuarine area (Tramandaí Lagoon) is used as a reference point to calculate the cost distance to the other lagoons (see Taís Guimarães et al. 2014 for details, https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10750-014-1954-x). Ichthyofauna data were obtained from field sampling conducted by the authors, and some occurrence records were complemented with data from SpeciesLink. Records marked with “*” were obtained from the SpeciesLink platform (http://splink.cria.org.br/).
