Abstract

These data consist of five files. One gives the location coordinates, one the plot coordinates at each location. Within these plots, open flowers were counted during different days of the experiment (a before and after mowing treatment design - for detailed methods see the accompanying paper*) and pollinator visitations to these flowers were surveyed. The final dataset gives Transect counts at the location level during different stages of the experiment. The visitation data can be used to determine activity, whereas the transect data gives insight in species composition. While there are no legal restraints, some pollinators needed to be brought back to the lab for species level identification (transect count data).

*Relevant section from the paper abstract: We here present a partial mowing field experiment on dike grasslands to study how pollinator communities develop in unmown strips (refuges) within mown dike locations compared to unmown controls. We collected data on flower visitation frequency (counting 28553 unique visitation events) and community composition from transect counts (identifying 4530 pollinators to the species level) in three periods; before (four days), directly after (four days) and later (until four weeks) after mowing.
