Abstract
Data uploaded here were collected by the Myall Lakes Dingo/Dapin research project studying a population of dingoes on Worimi Country in the Myall Lakes region of NSW, Australia. Data and code were used to assess the impact of inter-group conflict and mortality on group ranging patterns.

Overview
The data presented here were collected as part of research projects studying a population of dingoes in the Myall Lakes region of New South Wales, Australia.
The associated research used three sources of information:
- Camera-trap photographs from cameras placed on trails to estimate dingo population density using spatial capture–recapture methods.
- Camera-trap videos recording dingo scent-marking behaviour.
- On-ground observations from local land managers.
The first two data sources are provided in this repository.
Data files
Three datasets are provided:
DingoDetections.csvCollarDataPre.csvpostconflictdata.csv
DingoDetections.csv
This dataset contains camera-trap detections of dingoes relevant to the dingo population-density study. Camera stations consisted of paired cameras, with one camera positioned on each side of a trail and directed towards the road. This arrangement was designed to photograph both flanks of individual dingoes.
| Variable | Description |
|---|---|
Species |
Species detected. In this dataset, all records are dingoes. |
Individual |
Profile assigned to an individual dingo when first sighted. Subsequent detections of the same individual were assigned to the corresponding profile. |
DateTime |
Date and time of detection at the camera station, recorded in Australian Eastern Daylight Time. |
Trap |
Camera-trap station at which the dingo was detected. |
Pack |
Pack to which the identified dingo belonged: SL pack or MB pack. |
Period |
Conflict period: before indicates before the first dingo death; during indicates between the first and second dingo deaths; and after indicates after the second dingo death. |
CollarDataPre.csv
This dataset contains hourly GPS fixes from two collared dingoes in the Myall Lakes region. The data were used to estimate the home ranges of two adjacent packs before a period of intraspecific conflict, defined here as the deaths of dominant dingoes in adjacent packs.
| Variable | Description |
|---|---|
Year |
Year of the GPS fix, in Australian Eastern Daylight Time. |
Day |
Day of the year of the GPS fix, in Australian Eastern Daylight Time. |
Hour |
Hour of the GPS fix. |
Minutes |
Minute of the GPS fix. |
Latitude |
Latitude of the GPS fix. |
Longitude |
Longitude of the GPS fix. |
Altitude |
Estimated altitude of the dingo at the time of the GPS fix, in metres above sea level. |
Hdop |
Horizontal dilution of precision of the GPS satellites at the time of the fix. |
Num_of_sats |
Number of satellites used to estimate the GPS location. |
Individual |
Identifier of the collared dingo. |
postconflictdata.csv
This dataset contains GPS collar data from two individual dingoes in the MB and SL packs. The data were collected after the conflict period and were used to estimate post-conflict home ranges.
GPS-fix time was recorded differently from the pre-conflict dataset, resulting in the addition of a month column. The remaining variables are equivalent in meaning.
| Variable | Description |
|---|---|
Latitude |
Latitude of the GPS fix. |
Longitude |
Longitude of the GPS fix. |
Individual |
Identifier of the collared dingo. |
altitude |
Estimated altitude of the dingo at the time of the GPS fix, in metres above sea level. |
Hdop |
Horizontal dilution of precision of the GPS satellites at the time of the fix. |
num_sats |
Number of satellites used to estimate the GPS location. |
year |
Year of the GPS fix, in Australian Eastern Daylight Time. |
month_aedt |
Month of the GPS fix, in Australian Eastern Daylight Time. |
day_aedt |
Day of the GPS fix, in Australian Eastern Daylight Time. |
hour_aedt |
Hour of the GPS fix, in Australian Eastern Daylight Time. |
Pack |
Pack represented by the collared dingo. |
R scripts
The following R scripts are used to generate figures and analyse the datasets.
1. Collar Data figure conflict location
File name: 1._Collar_Data_Figure_Conflict_Location.R
Generates a figure showing the approximate territories of two adjacent dingo packs and the locations of dingo deaths examined in the associated study.
Uses:
CollarDataPre.csvpostconflictdata.csv
1.1 Plotting MCP home ranges
File name: 1.1_Plotting_MCP_home_ranges.R
Generates a supplementary figure demonstrating that the home ranges of the dingo packs stabilised into non-overlapping ranges after the period of conflict. This script uses the datasets associated with the conflict-location figure.
2. Detections over time
File name: 2._Detections_Over_Time.R
Describes the number of dingo detections within the study zones during the period of killings. The data were derived from the camera-trap survey. The results suggested that dingo territorial boundaries were destabilised for a period following the killings.
