Abstract
Nest-box supplementation is widely used to increase barn owl (Tyto alba) populations for biological rodent control in agricultural landscapes. To investigate the occurrence and consequences of nest switching by fledgling barn owls, we used Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) monitoring systems to continuously record movements among nest boxes in the Hula Valley, Israel, during the 2020 and 2021 breeding seasons.
A total of 464 nestlings and 108 adults were PIT-tagged, and RFID systems monitored 50 active nest boxes, generating more than 1.2 million detections. The dataset includes the analysis dataset used in statistical models and individual nest-switching records derived from RFID monitoring.
The study found that nest switching was common, with 12.9% of tagged fledglings visiting foreign nests and 54% of monitored nests receiving at least one nest switcher. Nest-switcher rate increased with local breeding density and was negatively associated with fledging success of host broods.

Description of the data and file structure
These data were collected during the 2020 and 2021 breeding seasons in the Hula Valley, northern Israel. The study used Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems to investigate nest-switching behavior by fledgling barn owls (Tyto alba) and its association with breeding performance in host broods.
A total of 464 nestlings and 108 adults were PIT-tagged. RFID systems were installed on 50 active nest boxes across two breeding seasons and recorded more than 1.2 million RFID detections.
