Abstract
This package includes code and data used to build a 'parameter space' from outputs of a reaction-diffusion model of tooth morphogenesis called ToothMaker and then perform simulations of tooth complexity evolution within that parameter space. The datasets include the output of simulations conducted in ToothMaker (required to build the parameter spaces) as well as classification of tooth complexity and pattern data with the parameter space. In addition to the datasets relevant to ToothMaker, the package also includes tooth cusp pattern and cusp number data for a range of placental mammals species and their close relatives which is required to perform a phylogenetic reconstruction of placental tooth complexity. The included code performs a number of steps associated with the analysis including extracting tooth complexity measurements from ToothMaker outputs (R language), measuring enamel knot number (FIJI software), assembling the resultant parameter space (R language), simulating trait evolution within the parameter space (R language), comparing tooth complexity variation within the ToothMaker and placental datasets (R language), ancestral state reconstruction of placental tooth complexity and pattern data (R language), and exporting the results as tables and plots (R language).
