Abstract
Tabular data including average wheat grain yield, wheat grain protein concentration, NDVI readings, nugget:sill ratio, nitrogen rate treatment assignments at two scales (subplot and whole plot) are included. Data are associated with Nitrogen rate influences on protein concentration, yield, and NDVI in spring wheat following pea and cover crop mixture, published in Agrosystems, Geosciences & Environment in 2025.

Description: Data from a study on spring wheat in the year following pea and a cover crop at the whole-plot level.
Variables
- SamplingDate: Date of sampling in MM/DD/YYYY format
- PlantingDate: Date of planting in MM/DD/YYYY format
- DaysAfterPlanting: Days between planting and sampling
- Plot: Plot ID
- ObservationCount: Number of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) measurements taken in each plot with a tractor mounted crop circle instrument
- AvgNDVI: Average NDVI at the plot level
- nugget: Nugget from plot-level NDVI semivariogram performed in Arc GIS Pro
- partialsill: Partial sill from plot-level NDVI semivariogram performed in Arc GIS Pro
- actualsill: Sill from plot-level NDVI semivariogram performed in Arc GIS Pro
- ratio: Nugget:sill ratio, used as a measure of spatial heterogeneity at plot level
- range m: Range in meters from plot-level NDVI semivariogram performed in Arc GIS Pro
- Rotation: Rotation ID. Rotation 4 had spring wheat in 2018 and field pea-cover crop in 2019. Rotation 4 had field pea-cover crop in 2018 and spring wheat in 2019.
- CurrentCrop: Crop at time of sampling. All were spring wheat.
- ResidueRemoval: Residue removal treatment of the larger study. All plots in this study had no residue removal.
- NRate: Categorical nitrogen rate treatment assignments assigned at subplot level; target N level: A = 235 kg ha−1, B = 202 kg ha−1, C = 168 kg ha−1, D = 135 kg ha−1
