Abstract
The supplied data represents key environmental variables for collection sites included in a population genomic study of black abalone. These data include measures of sea surface temperature (SST), pH, and ROMS connectivity (PLD 5, 10, 15 days) generated or synthesized for this study that are not readily available on public databases.

This dataset contains key files needed to reproduce sea surface temperature (SST), pH, and Regional Ocean Model Systems (ROMS) connectivity for collection sites included in this study.
Description of the data and file structure
- annual_SST_by_site.csv: Spreadsheet containing annually summarized SST at each site for 2006-2021. Columns:
- marine_site_code: Three letter shorthand for collection location name
- Georegion: Name of region in California.
- island: Whether data comes from ‘Mainland’ California or one of the California Channel Islands, if applicable
- year: Year of observation
- N Rows: number of observations from which mean & std are derived
- mean_annual_temp: Mean annual temperature in Celsius
- Std Dev: Standard deviation of the temperature (Celsius)
- Std Err: Standard error of the mean (Celsius)
- CV: Coefficient of variation
- pH_by_site.csv: Spreadsheet containing monthly pH at each site from 1990-2010. Columns:
- Year: year of observation
- Month: month of observation
- pH: as in pH scale for acids & bases
- pop: Three letter shorthand for collection location identical to ‘marine_site_code’ in Table 1.
- ROMS_connectivity_PLD_5_10_15.csv: Spreadsheet containing ROMS (https://www.myroms.org/)) site-to-site “Connectivity” values representing the modeled probability of larval dispersal between locations in California. Columns:
- PLD: modeled Pelagic Larval Dispersal duration. One of 5, 10, or 15 days
- Donor cell: Integer corresponding to unique geographic cell used as the larval ‘donor’ site in ROMS model
- Settlement cell: Integer corresponding to unique geographic cell used as the larval ‘settlement’ site in ROMS model
- Connectivity: Measure of probability of dispersal between donor and settlement sites, 0 = no probability
- Donor Lat: Latitude (degrees) of donor cell in ROMS model
- Donor Long: Longitude (degrees) of donor cell in ROMS model
- Settlement Lat: Latitude (degrees) of donor cell in ROMS model
- Settlement Long: Longitude (degrees) of donor cell in ROMS model
- ROMS_cells_by_site.csv: Spreadsheet containing ROMS cell numbers for each collection site in the study. Needed to filter item #3 for relevant values. Columns:
- Site: Three letter shorthand for collection location identical to ‘marine_site_code’ in Table 1.
- Latitude: Latitude of site, rounded to 0.1 degrees to obscure collection site
- Longitude: Longitude of site, rounded to 0.1 degrees to obscure collection site
- Cell: Closest cell number corresponding to site. Same as numbers used in Columns 2 & 3 of Table 3.
