Abstract
This dataset contains individual multilocus genotypes of the hazel dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius), obtained through non-invasive sampling in the Agri Valley (Basilicata, southern Italy) during May–August 2023. The tab-delimited file includes individual sample metadata (sample ID, trapping and sampling dates, locality, geographic coordinates, positional uncertainty, and species identification) and allele calls for seven microsatellite loci, with missing data coded as “NA”. The dataset is suitable for reuse in population genetics, non-invasive sampling validation, and future conservation monitoring program designs. All personal or sensitive information has been excluded. The dataset is released under a CC0 license, ensuring unrestricted reuse; however, we request that you provide proper acknowledgment of the authors.

General information
Date of Data Collection: May-August 2023
Geographic Region: Agri Valley (Basilicata, Italy)
Target Species: Muscardinus avellanarius
Description:
This dataset contains individual genotypes for 7 polymorphic microsatellite loci, sampled from Muscardinus avellanarius in high Agri Valley in southern Italy. Each row corresponds to a single individual and includes sampling metadata and allele calls for each locus.
Data Format:
- File name: 'Microsatellite_genotypes.txt'
- File format: tab-delimited text (.txt)
- Encoding: UTF-8
- Decimal separator: period (.)
Column descriptions:
1. 'sample_id': Unique ID for each individual (string)
2. 'date_trap_placement': Date when the trap was deployed in the field (DD-MM-YYYY)
3. 'date_sampling': Date when the sample was collected from the trap (DD-MM-YYYY)
4. 'locality': Name or description of the geographic location where the sample was collected
5. 'latitude': Decimal latitude of collection site (EPSG:4326 - WGS84)
6. 'longitude': Decimal longitude of collection site (EPSG:4326 - WGS84)
7. 'coordinate_uncertainty_m': Horizontal positional uncertainty in meters, estimated from GPS device (GARMIN GPSMAP64s). Most locations recorded with <10 m accuracy under open sky. In forested areas, uncertainty may reach up to 20 m.
8. 'species': Scientific name (binomial nomenclature) of the identified organism collected in the sample.
9-22. 'Mav1_allele1' - 'Mav8_allele2': Allele sizes (in base pairs) for 7 microsatellite loci (2 alleles per locus)
Microsatellite markers used:
- Mav1 to Mav8: 7 validated dinucleotide markers published in Bani et al., 2017 (Conservation Genetics)
Missing data:
Allele values are recorded as 'NA' in cases of amplification failure, absence of detectable alleles, or detection of more than two alleles.
