Data were collected from 30 Holstein heifers. Calves were assigned to 1 of 2 treatments (n = 15 calves/treatment): 1) "Wiped" where 0.2 mL paste was applied to each horn bud and removed after 1 h, and 2) "Normal" where 0.2 mL of paste was applied to each horn bud and left to absorb and dry. For both treatments, horn buds were shaved with a #40 blade. Treatments were assigned in blocks of 2 using a random number generator without replacement. On d 3 of life, pain relief was provided, disbudding was carried out according to the calf's treatment. Disturbance or removal of the paste by calves rubbing on the hutch or another body part was scored at 1 and 4 h after application as "Rubbing". Throughout the analysis and manuscript, the terms "disturbance" and "rubbing" are used interchangeably. Wounds were scored for the presence/absence of 8 tissue types: fresh paste, attached necrotic, detaching necrotic, exudate, granulation, crust, epithelium, and fully healed. Wounds were scored 2x/wk until January 2024, at which point they were observed 1x/wk until they were scored as fully healed 2 consecutive times or 21 wk later when data collection ended. The presence of horn regrowth was monitored through visual inspection and palpation throughout this time. If regrowth was extensive, a second procedure to remove the regrowth occurred. This lead to 2 categories: horn regrowth present, and a subset where regrowth was removed. Wound size (diameter) was collected the day after disbudding and 5 wk later. Throughout all excel files, "N/A" represents missing data and outcomes that were not achieved (e.g., latency to fully heal for a certain horn bud).
