Abstract
Plastic deformation in polycrystalline metals is usually primarily accommodated through dislocation glide, which often organizes into discrete slip bands. The evolution of plasticity is governed by the interactions of these dislocation structures with one another, as well as with grain boundaries and other microstructural interfaces or features. Traditional observations of slip bands are largely limited to free surfaces, constraining our understanding of their three-dimensional behavior within the bulk. The X-ray topotomography and diffraction contrast tomography (DCT) datasets presented here enable direct visualization of the three-dimensional morphology of slip bands in relation to the surrounding grain structure. These data reveal, for instance, in the investigated titanium alloy that slip transmission across grain boundaries is more prevalent at free surfaces, while in the bulk, transmission events are often driven by geometrically constrained regions, such as triple junctions, where elevated local stress heterogeneity promotes dislocation activity across interfaces. This dataset is shared with the community to facilitate broader access to and analysis of correlated 3D deformation and microstructure alloy datasets, which are expected to become increasingly prevalent in the near future.

METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Material. The Ti-7Al sample was fabricated by extrusion and well-annealed to produce approximately 100 micrometer grains. Given the high aluminum content in this titanium alloy, alpha2 - Ti3Al precipitates are present on the nanometer scale.
High-Resolution Digital Image Correlation, DCT and Topomography. The data shared in this manuscript were measured from an identical Ti-7Al sample with four distinct multi-modal techniques. Surface and bulk measurements were made from a dogbone shaped sample with metallographically polished flat faces conducive for monotonic tensile loading and imaging. Surface electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) maps were collected before and after in situ deformation with SEM DIC measurements such that the grain structure and crystallographic orientations are mapped in the sample gauge section at high resolution. The sample was deformed to roughly 0.8% macroscopic strain, and then unloaded. Note that SEM DIC measurements were made in the unloaded state, both before loading and after loading, capturing the plastic slip and residual strain that occurred due to deformation to just past the 0.2% yield strength of the material. The Heaviside SEM DIC measurements performed have a resolution of 0.2 and 0.3 pixels (7 nm and 10 nm respectively), capable of precisely mapping the location of slip deformation at the sample gauge surface over mm2 fields of view. Afterwards, the sample was taken to the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), beam line ID11 to collect DCT and topotomography data. DCT, a near-field synchrotron X-ray technique (detector is millimeters from the sample), provides grain sizes, shapes, and crystallographic orientations over the gauge section of the sample. This information is used in the experimental topotomography setup to provide the stage tilts necessary to rotate the sample 360 degrees while maintaining the Bragg condition in each specific grain of interest. This process is repeated for 45 grains in the Ti-7Al sample investigated, for some of them multiple reflections were accessible and scanned which lead in total to 75 topotomography acquisitions.

DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: DCT_Reconstruction.zip
An .H5 file and an accompanying .XDMF file that contains the reconstructed DCT data including orientations, individual segmented grains (Grain IDs), a mask to identify the sample volume, and meshed slip planes associated with the grain they are contained in. The .H5 file in in the HDF5 data format and the .XDMF wrapper file allows the Paraview visualization software to read the different fields in the .H5 file.
TS3.h5: HDF5 data file
TS3.xdmf: Wrapper file to accompany the HDF5 data file
File 2 Name: Topotomography_stacks.zip
File 2 description: Data and outputs from the Topotomography reconstruction. The contents include the integrated topotomographs as a function of Grain ID showing topographical contrast, including slip bands contrast and grain shape.
DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: Topotomography_stacks.zip
An HDF5 .H5 file that contains the integrated topographs for each Grain ID. The file consists of subfolders named according to the grain ID and the reflection being imaged, for instance (-1, 2, -1, 2). Each grain folder contains metadata files about the stage information during collection, along with a stack (3D array) of 90 topographs (subfolder 'tt'), each represented as a 2D image.
File 3 Name: 2D_EBSD.zip

DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: 2D_EBSD.zip
A 2D EBSD .ang file in ASCII format containing the coordinates of each point along with the associated Euler angles, image quality, and confidence index obtained from EBSD measurements. Also a 2D EBSD file in .oh5 format (HDF5), which contains the same information as in the .ang file. The file heading in the HDF5 file correspond to those in the .ang file using well defined labels, including phi, phi1, phi2 (Euler angles), confidence index (CI), image quality (IQ), and phase (only alpha phase). X position and Y position are indicated in microns. This HDF5 format is consistent with the conventions in EDAX OIM Analysis v9.1.
File 4 Name: HR_DIC.zip
File 4 description: HR-DIC data describing plasticity after specimen deformation, obtained from surface measurements using high-resolution digital image correlation showing strain distribution and slip bands.
DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: HR_DIC.zip
The HR-DIC data are organized in a folder structure. At the root level, the reconstructed maps of all regions are provided as 32-bit TIFF images. These images can be viewed using software such as ImageJ. The pixel values in each image correspond to quantitative physical values of the full fields: strain fields are given in units of length, in-plane slip amplitude in pixels, and in-plane slip direction in radians.
Fused_GYX_step1_NoBlur.tif: strain field YX.
Fused_GYX_step1_3pxGB.tif: strain field YX with a 3-pixel Gaussian blur applied.
Fused_GXY_step1_NoBlur.tif: strain field XY.
Fused_GXY_step1_3pxGB.tif: strain field XY with a 3-pixel Gaussian blur applied.
Fused_GrY_step1_NoBlur.tif: strain field YY.
Fused_GrY_step1_3pxGB.tif: strain field YY with a 3-pixel Gaussian blur applied.
Fused_GrX_step1_NoBlur.tif: strain field XX (loading direction).
Fused_GrX_step1_3pxGB.tif: strain field XX with a 3-pixel Gaussian blur applied.
Fused_BlN_step1.tif: in-plane slip amplitude (pixels).
Fused_BlA_step1.tif: in-plane slip direction (radians).
Since the full fused images are generated by merging and edges cropping sub-images, dedicated folders for each map (with explicit names such as BlN) are also provided. Each of these folders contains:
.tif files, which are the sub-image formats.
.X files (e.g., *.BlN, .GrX), which are the associated text files containing the coordinates and corresponding values.
Additionally, each folder includes a “Cropped” subfolder. This subfolder contains the TIFF files used in reconstructing the fused image. In this context, cropped refers to the removal of edge regions from the raw TIFF files before merging the maps into the final full image.
File 5 Name: DIC_RawImages_Step0.zip
File 5 description: Raw SEM secondary electron images used to make the HR-DIC measurements for the unloaded state of the specimen.
DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: DIC_RawImages_Step0.zip
The HR-DIC raw image data are organized into two separate zip files. In this file, a folder is contained with all the individual images used for the HR-DIC calculation from the unloaded initial step 0. Images are labeled such that P1_1 is the top left image, with the first number being the row, and the second number the column position. For example, P2_3 is the second image down from the top left, and three images in from the left. P5_10 is the lower right most image. Each .tif is a stack of 40 frames individual dwell steps, which can be z-projected with ImageJ or similar image processing tools into a single image.
