Abstract
This dataset contains all the raw images used in the main article and the supplementary material, as well as additional images not used in the study. They include optical photographs, Sweep Electron Microscopy (SEM), and X-ray projections used in Micro Computed Tomography and 3D reconstructions. Each package of images is organized in folders according to the technique employed. All files used in the phylogenetic study are given in two files, one for the Parsimony and the other for the Bayesian inference. This dataset is published under Creative Commons Zero (CC0).

Description of the data and file structure
These folders include the original optical and electronic photographs; x-ray projections used for the micro computed tomography; matrix, scripts, and trees generated in the parsimony and Bayesian inferences
Files and variables
File: SEM_Archostemata.zip
Description: Sweep Electron Microscopy (SEM) of Notocupes cratoensis, Cratocupes scabrosus, and Tetraphalerus vetustus
File: Photos_Archostemata.zip
Description: Optical photographs of Notocupes cratoensis and Cratocupes scabrosus
File: Parsimony_inferences.zip
Description: Results of the Parsimony inferences. Included files: ”Biffi et al_Matrix_General_Coleoptera.ss”: original matrix used in the Parsimony and Bayesian analyses; ”EW.tre”: resulting tree of analysis with equal weighting; ”k3.tre”, ”k9.tre”, ”k12.tre”, and ”k25.tre”, resulting trees of analysis with implied weighting with values of k respectively 3, 9, 12, and 25. For further information, see the Supplementary materials.
File: MicroCT_Notocupes_DICOM.zip
Description: Package of files with raw projections obtained from Zeiss Xraria 410 Versa used for the µCT Scan of †Notocupes cratoensis accessible in open-source software, such as 3D Slicer, ITK-SNAP, InVesalius, Horos, RadiAnt DICOM Viewer, MicroDicom, ImageJ + plugin, and Fiji. The folder contains executable files that should be kept together when running in the chosen software.
File: MicroCT_Tetraphalerus_DICOM.zip
Description: Package of files with raw projections obtained from Zeiss Xraria 410 Versa used for the µCT Scan of †Tetraphalerus vetustus accessible in open-source software, such as 3D Slicer, ITK-SNAP, InVesalius, Horos, RadiAnt DICOM Viewer, MicroDicom, ImageJ + plugin, and Fiji. The folder contains executable files that should be kept together when running in the chosen software.

File: Bayesian_inferences.zip
Description: Results of the Bayesian inferences. Files in the formats .nex and .tre are separated in folders according to the analysis: ”non-clock”, ”tip_dating”, and ”uniform_tip_dating”. For the original matrix used in the analyses, please see the folder ”Parsimony_inferencces”. For further information, see the Supplementary materials.
File: Reconstruction_Cratocupes.zip
Description: 3D reconstruction of Cratocupes scabrosus in .txm format made from projections obtained from Zeiss Xraria 410 Versa used for the µCT Scan. This format requires software VG Studio (e.g., VG Studio v.3.2.5). The subfolders [vg-project] and [vg-data] contain files generated by the software VG Studio associated with MicroCT reconstructions and should be kept together for viewing and analysis in VGStudio. For raw projections accessible on open source softwares, please use the files in the folder ”MicroCT_Notocupes_DICOM”. Note: this folder does not include the 3D reconstruction. Alternatives of open source software include, e.g., 3D Slicer, ITK-SNAP, InVesalius, Horos, RadiAnt DICOM Viewer, MicroDicom, ImageJ + plugin, and Fiji.
