Helium pycnometer density measurements of volcanic ash sourced from explosive eruptions that produced volcanic lightning

Abstract

Ash fall samples were provided by colleagues for several explosive eruptions where volcanic lightning was either detected or documented. Sample information (volcano location, sample collection location, distance from the associated volcano, and name and institution of sample provider) is provided in the named spreadsheet. The data provided in the individual documents (titled with sample name) provide the instrument parameters, raw volume measurements, and density calculations of ash samples. Sample mass was measured on a balance, input prior to analysis, and is included in the reported data. Two models of the Quantachrome (both 3000 and 5000 models) helium pycnometer was used for sample measurements.
