Abstract
The discrimination of quantum operations has long been an intriguing challenge, with theoretical research significantly advancing our understanding of the quantum features in discriminating quantum objects. This challenge is closely related to the discrimination of quantum states, and proof-of-principle demonstrations of the latter have already been realized using optical photons. However, the experimental demonstration of discriminating general quantum operations, including both unitary and non-unitary operations, has remained elusive. In general quantum systems, especially those with high dimensions, the preparation of arbitrary quantum states and the implementation of arbitrary quantum operations and generalized measurements are non-trivial tasks. Here, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate the optimal unambiguous discrimination of up to 6 displacement operators and the unambiguous discrimination of non-unitary quantum operations. Our results demonstrate powerful tools for experimental research in quantum information processing and are expected to stimulate a wide range of valuable applications in the field of quantum sensing.

Description: This file is the source data for Figure 2 in “Unambiguous discrimination of general quantum operations” and can be opened in Excel.
The sheet “Fig2a_data” includes the conclusive and erroneous probabilities for unambiguously discriminating four-fold displacement operators as functions of the displacement amplitude. Column A lists the alpha values for both experimental and simulation results of the four-fold displacement. Column B provides the mean value of the experimental conclusive probabilities, while Column C lists the corresponding error bars. Column D contains the simulated conclusive probabilities. Column E provides the mean values of the experimental erroneous probabilities, with Column F listing the error bars. Column G contains the simulated erroneous probabilities. Column H lists alpha values for the theoretical conclusive probabilities, and Column I provides the theoretical conclusive probabilities.
The sheet “Fig2b_data” contains the conclusive and erroneous probabilities for unambiguously discriminating six-fold displacement operators as functions of the displacement amplitude. Column A lists the alpha values for both experimental and simulation results of the six-fold displacement. Column B provides the mean values of the experimental conclusive probabilities, with Column C listing the corresponding error bars.
The sheets “Fig2c_data” and “Fig2d_data” contain the source data for the conditional probabilities of the POVM measurements, conditioned on the selected displacement operators in four-fold for displacement amplitudes α=1.6 and α=2.0, respectively. These sheets include mean values, error bars of experimental results, and ideal conditional probabilities.
The sheets “Fig2e_data” and “Fig2f_data” provide the source data for the conditional probabilities of the POVM measurements, conditioned on the selected displacement operators in six-fold for displacement amplitudes α=1.6 and α=2.0, respectively. These sheets include mean values, error bars of experimental results, and ideal conditional probabilities.
