Abstract
This repository includes: (i) the categorical biome reference raster and present and future bioclimatic predictor stacks used in the analysis; (ii) balanced modeling datasets comprising 16,000 observations for each of 14 biomes and the probability Random Forest model fitted with the ranger package; (iii) derived spatial layers describing biome predictions, normalized Shannon entropy, alternative-biome support (1 − p1), uncertainty tiers, cross-model agreement, and projected biome transitions; and (iv) scripts and supporting outputs for nested spatial cross-validation, predictor selection, sampling-sensitivity analysis, individual and grouped permutation importance, accumulated local effects, present-day mapping, and mid-century climate projections. The original WorldClim version 2.1 bioclimatic data and WWF Terrestrial Ecoregions source data are publicly available from the sources documented in the repository.
This dataset contains the R code and author-generated analytical products supporting:
Costa, G. C., Aguirre-Santoro, J., Gehara, M., Gonçalves-Souza, T., Michelangeli, F. A., and Carnaval, A. C. “Mapping biome boundaries from climate patterns: a machine learning framework” in Global Ecology and Biogeography.
Contents
The compressed archive contains:
scripts/: R scripts used to run the analyses and generate the outputs.R/: supporting R functions.Metadata/: biome and scenario lookup tables, methodological notes, validation information, software details, and a comprehensive data dictionary.outputs/: fitted model, analytical tables, and author-generated spatial products.figures/: manuscript and supplementary figures.README/: detailed documentation and instructions for reproducing the analysis.
The file Metadata/DATA_DICTIONARY.md describes every column in all tabular files, including abbreviations, units, scales, and categorical codes.
External input data
Third-party source rasters are not redistributed in this Dryad package because their licenses are not compatible with Dryad’s CC0 license waiver. To reproduce the complete analysis, users must obtain the following inputs directly from their providers:
- WorldClim version 2.1 present-day Bio1–Bio19 variables at 2.5-arc-minute resolution:
https://www.worldclim.org/data/worldclim21.html - WorldClim version 2.1 CMIP6 Bio1–Bio19 projections for SSP2–4.5, 2041–2060, at 2.5-arc-minute resolution for ACCESS-CM2, BCC-CSM2-MR, MPI-ESM1-2-HR, IPSL-CM6A-LR, and MIROC6:

Dinerstein et al. (2017): https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/bix014
The README contained in the archive explains how to prepare and place these inputs for reproduction of the workflow.
Software
The analyses were conducted in R 4.4.1. Required packages include terra, sf, dplyr, ranger, ggplot2, tidyr, scales, forcats, stringr, ggalluvial, and patchwork. Exact package and session information is provided in Metadata/sessionInfo.txt.
