Abstract
This dataset accompanies the study "Mutualism and antagonism in a post-extinction Hawaiian bird–lobelioid pollination system" and contains observations of bird–flower interactions, pollination outcomes, nectar robbing behavior, and experimental nectar replenishment measurements from three endangered Hawaiian lobelioid species (Cyanea shipmanii, Clermontia lindseyana, and Clermontia pyrularia). The dataset includes records of species interactions, experimental measurements, and associated metadata, together with documentation describing the dataset structure and variables. These data provide a detailed record of contemporary bird–plant interactions in a post-extinction pollination system and may be reused to investigate pollination ecology, nectar robbing, trait matching, behavioral interactions, plant reproductive ecology, and comparative analyses of plant–pollinator networks. Sampling was conducted under the appropriate permits for federally protected plant species. The dataset contains no personally identifiable information or sensitive human subjects data, and no sensitive locality information beyond that reported in the associated publication.

Description of the data and file structure
This repository contains the data and code supporting the manuscript Mutualism and antagonism in a post-extinction Hawaiian bird–lobelioid pollination system. The archive includes datasets used to quantify floral visitation, model pollen contact and nectar robbing during bird–flower interactions, and analyze nectar replenishment following experimental nectar robbing treatments.
Files and variables
File: experiment.csv
Description: Flower-level dataset from the nectar robbing experiment. Each row represents an individual flower measured on two consecutive days to quantify changes in nectar volume following experimental treatments.
Variables
- plant_spp: Plant species. Codes: CLELIN = Clermontia lindseyana; CLEPYR = Clermontia pyrularia; CYASHI = Cyanea shipmanii.
- plant_id: Anonymous identifier for the individual plant.
- flower_sex: Floral sex stage. M = male; F = female.
- treatment: Experimental treatment applied to the flower. C = control; P = piercing; S = splitting.
- day_1: Nectar volume (µL) measured on the first day of the experiment.
- day_2: Nectar volume (µL) measured on the second day of the experiment.

Description: Flowering window dataset used to define the period during which each plant had open flowers and was available for inclusion in visitation analyses.
Variables
- plant_id: Anonymous identifier for the individual plant.
- start_date: First date on which open flowers were observed (mm/dd/yyyy).
- end_date: Last date on which open flowers were observed (mm/dd/yyyy).
- days: Number of days the plant was sampled while flowering.

Description: Individual floral visitation records extracted from motion-triggered camera footage. Each row represents a single bird visitation event.

plant_id: Anonymous identifier for the individual plant.
date: Date on which the visitation occurred (mm/dd/yyyy).
bird_species: Bird species. Codes: IIWI = ʻIʻiwi (Drepanis coccinea); HIAM = Hawaiʻi ʻAmakihi (Chlorodrepanis virens).
