Abstract

Air quality measurements were made at Carlsbad Caverns National Park (CAVE) in southeastern New Mexico, US, in July and August 2021. Methane (CH4), oxidized nitrogen (NOx/NOy), ozone (O3), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were measured from an instrument shelter near the the CAVE visitor center (32.178°N, 104.441°W; 1,335 m elevation). Speciated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured from a climate-controlled box truck parked approximately 100 m from the instrument shelter. All data are ambient concentrations. The data were used to investigate the impact of extensive oil and natural gas development near the park on regional air quality. CAVE is located near the western edge of the Permian Basin, one of the largest oil and gas-producing basins in the US. The measurement site is surrounded by desert shrubland. The nearest town is Carlsbad, New Mexico (population: 30,000), approximately 30 km northeast of CAVE.
