Abstract
This contains the CESM forcing files and ocean model output used in Chiang J.C.H, K. Tokos, S.-Y. Lee, and K. Matsumoto, Contrasting impacts of the South Pacific Split Jet and the Southern Annular Mode modulation on Southern Ocean circulation and biogeochemistry. In revision for Paleoceanography, Oct 2017.
See Chiang et al. (2017) for details.
1. Forcing files
There are four tar files that contain the forcing fields for each of the four simulations done: SJ_weak_POP2_forcing.tar - weak Split Jet; SJ_strong_POP2_forcing.tar - strong Split Jet; SAM_negative_POP2_forcing.tar - negative SAM; SAM_positive_POP2_forcing.tar - positive SAM
The model used is the Community Earth System Model (CESM) 1.2.2, using the compset “2000_DATM%NYF_SLND_CICE_POP2_DROF%NYF_SGLC_SWAV”. It includes prognostic ocean (POP2) and sea ice (CICE) modules, but with a prescribed ‘data’ atmosphere (DATM) and ‘data’ runoff (DROF). Details of the model, and code, can be found here: http://www2.cesm.ucar.edu
Each tar file contains 3 files, replacing the standard 'Normal year' forcing files used (nyf.giss.T62.051007.nc; nyf.gxgxs.T62.051007.nc; and nyf.ncep.T62.050923.nc)
2. Model output
There are four NETCDF files that contain the annual average of the last 20 years of 600-year simulations using the forcing fields above. The data was regridded from the gx1v6 horizontal resolution to a uniform 1x1 degree resolution, using the netcdf NCO's 'ncremap' function.
SAM_negative_20yrclim.nc - negative SAM simulation; SAM_positive_20yrclim.nc - positive SAM simulation; SJ_weak_20yrclim.nc - weak Split Jet simulation; and SJ_strong_20yrclim.nc - strong Split Jet simulation
See the master field list http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/atm-cam/docs/cam2.0/UsersGuide/UG-45.html#TABLE2_7 for description of each output variable
