Abstract

Using the luminance adjustment procedure, we evaluated four discomfort sensation on a Hopkinson-like glare scale: (a), (b), (c) and (d), respectively. Two methodological factors that were beleived to influence the luminance adjustment procedure were investigated. One was the stimulus range bias effect. This describes how the influence of the available range of a variable stimulus (i.e., glare source luminances) influence the setting made to a subjective sensation (i.e., "just uncomfortable" glare). 42 test participants were recruited to the experiment and made glare settings to four the discomfort sensations under three stimulus ranges with difference maximum luminances: low, middle, and high. Adjustments were performed to the luminance of a large articial window backlit by an array of warm and cool LEDs. This was repeated for two methods of control. Direct: with the obsever making adjustments directly to the glare source to the four discomfort sensations; and Indirect: with the experimenter adjusting the glare source according the vocal instructions of the participant.

The dataset here contains the luminace settings made to each of the four sensations under the three ranges and two methods of control for all 42 test participants.

Methods

This dataset was obtained from an experiment carried out in the SinBerBEST testbed facility at the Berekeley Education Alliance for Research in Singapore (BEARS). The room contained a large artifical window that acted as the glare source and provided a variable luminance that could be controlled via computer software.

Usage notes

Dataset is stored within comma-separated (csv) delimited Microsoft Excel files: "luminance" and "luminance first condition".

Note on how to use:

The statistical analyses were performed on the open-source software R and therefore the data has been formated according to the statistical tests that were performed.

The first column heading presents the participant identification (ID) in order in which they performed the experiment. The four discomfort sensations and two adjustments methods make up the next eight columns. The headings have been organised according to the condition: for example, "a_indirect" describes the discomfort sensation (a) and the indirect control method. The column named range gives the three different conditions used: 1= low range, 2= middle range, and 3= high range. The final column (found only in the file "luminance.csv" gives the method of presenting the pre-trial demonstration: 1= 50%, maximum limit, minimum limit, 50% and 2= 50%, minimum limit, maximum limit, 50%.
