Abstract
This study provides a comprehensive examination of fruit morphology and micromorphology characteristics of 28 populations of Onobrychis subgenus Onobrychis taxa from Iran, using both light and scanning electron microscopy. For each trait, 25 replicates were analyzed, encompassing a wide range of qualitative and quantitative traits. Data were processed using PAST and SPSS software. All examined taxa possessed one-segmented fruits with a similar epidermal structure. Hilum inward bend and bilateral symmetry showed limited variation, whereas fruit color ranged from pale green to various shades of brown and cream. A variety of fruit shapes was observed, with the half-circular form being the most common. Most taxa exhibited variation in margin type and epidermal outgrowths, predominantly spinose, although some lacked these structures entirely. Notably, O. altissima population 1 possessed a smooth (entire) fruit margin. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed that the first two components explained more than 66% of the total variation, and the PCA biplot showed clear differentiation among taxa based on trait combinations. However, hierarchical clustering using WARD method did not correspond well with the traditional sectional classification proposed in Flora Iranica and Flora of Iran. Significant infraspecific variation was also detected at both the variety and population levels. This study demonstrates that the examined characters provide limited but valuable taxonomic information within this subgenus. While traits such as hilum morphology and membranous fruit margins are useful for species delimitation, some others—including dorsi-ventral symmetry, fruit shape, and epidermal configuration—show variability, reducing their reliability at the sectional level. Cluster analyses further reveal incongruence with traditional classifications, supporting the need for taxonomic revision. The observed infraspecific variation suggests ongoing evolutionary divergence. Overall, an integrative approach combining morphological and molecular data is essential for a robust and phylogenetically meaningful classification.

Description:
This dataset contains morphological measurements of fruit (legume) characteristics for various Onobrychis species and their respective populations. The data were collected to assess phenotypic variation among these taxa.
Methodology:
The fruit characteristics were measured using a standardized protocol for Onobrychis morphology. Measurements for characteristics such as Epidermal excrescence, Disc margin, and Disc vestiture were taken using a micrometer to ensure precision.
Files:
Note: The contents of both files is identical.

- Onobrychis_Fruit_Morphology_Data2.csv
List of Variables (Column Headers):
- Species: The scientific name of the Onobrychis taxon.
- Population: The population designation. For species where two populations were sampled, they are identified as pop.1 and pop.2. For species where only a single population was sampled, the identifier is designated as pop.
- Legume shape: Categorical/Ordinal classification of the legume shape.
- Legume curvation: Assessment of the curvature of the legume hilum area (1 = Straight, 2 = Half-circle).
- Bilateral asymmetry: Binary score of the fruit asymmetry (0 = No, 1 = Yes).
- Epidermal excrescence: Score of the surface appendages on the epidermis.
- Disc margin: Qualitative score of the disc margin structure.
- Disc vestiture: Qualitative score of the hairiness/covering on the disc.
Data Coding Key:
To facilitate statistical analysis, morphological characters were scored numerically. The corresponding qualitative descriptions are as follows:
- Legume shape: 0.5 (Half-circular), 0.75 (Circular), 1.5 (Flabellate)
- Legume curvation: 1 (Straight), 2 (Half-circle)
- Bilateral asymmetry: 0 (No), 1 (Yes)
- Epidermal excrescence: 0 (Absent), 1 (Dentate), 1.5 (Spinose)
- Disc margin: 0 (Entire), 1 (Dentate), 1.5 (Spinose), 2.5 (Crenate)
- Disc vestiture: 0 (Glabrous), 0.5 (Puberulent), 0.75 (Pubescent), 1 (Pilose), 1.25 (Tomentose), 1.75 (Sericeous), 2 (Villous)
Notes:
- File Consistency: The dataset is provided in both Excel (.xlsx) and CSV (.csv) formats. The contents of the two files are identical; the CSV version is provided for broader compatibility.
